BOJ to Buy Longer-Dated JGBs

TOKYO (Nikkei)--The Bank of Japan is set to expand its purchases of Japanese government bonds into longer maturities in its first policymaking meeting under new Governor Haruhiko Kuroda, The Nikkei reported in its Thursday morning edition.

At the conclusion of its two-day meeting Thursday, the policy board is also expected to move up the start of fixed monthly amounts of asset purchases -- so-called open-ended monetary easing that would mark a departure from the current approach.

Kuroda has said he will "do whatever possible" to extricate Japan from deflation. His new wave of easing is likely to consist mostly of buying more JGBs.

The BOJ currently buys outstanding JGBs with one to three years left until maturity. At Thursday's meeting, the policy board is expected to widen the scope to five- and 10-year bonds in an effort to push down long-term interest rates and encourage companies and individuals to borrow.

It will also consider increasing purchases of exchange-traded funds, real estate investment trusts and other risk assets.
